Quick read: Once you try this salve, you will never want to switch to any other lip balm. This is the best lip balm I’ve used, hands down – and I have always had chronically dry chaffed lips, in contrast to the oiliness on the rest of my face. I swear by this product!
Read on for my detailed review.
I love me some multitasking magic. A lip balm that can also be used as something else?
For the most part, the lip balms that I have purchased over the past couple of decades have hardly worked satisfactorily in their primary capacity as balms, forget about as anything else. I don’t recall a single lip balm I have fallen in love with or have wanted to use again. Nivea, Maybelline, Babylips, Vedic Line, Himalaya, Innisfree, Nykaa – I have tried too many of them to even list here. I mean, isn’t it the one product that every woman has to have in her handbag? A chapstick? Or a tub of some grease that is supposed to relive you of your dry lips and help glide the lipstick on better?
My brother and sister-in-law were coming to visit us from Canada and they asked me if I wanted anything, and I said, sure! I did some research and zeroed in on two products – the cult favourite Smith’s Rosebud Salve and the Lancome Teint Idole Ultra 24H Long Lasting foundation. Because I love me a good lip balm and a good foundation.

The packaging
A beautiful teal and pink flat tin. Strong vintage vibes. A lovely pink hue of balm inside. No fragrance. Absolutely travel-friendly. Will last you a long time. I’ve been using my tub for six months and I’m not even half-way through!
My experience with the product
This balm just works. That was my first impression, and that is what I state today as well. I started using it in the thick of winter, and the difference in the texture of my lips was immediate and striking. Right from the first application my lips looked and felt bathed in hydration and goodness, like they had an all natural lip gloss on them, like they had been injected with all the good minerals and vitamins in the nature. You know the plump, healthy look? Yep.
You must prime your lips with this if you want no flakiness peeping through your lipstick!
This salve is a joy to apply as well. It doesn’t dry out or congeal into a waxy product that one has to rub on to get any moisturising effects out of, like so many lip balms do over time. This one glides on smoothly on the lips, from day one to day 200, and stays that way (until you eat it with your meal or coffee).
And as if it wasn’t good enough on its own, I’ve since found a couple of more uses for this salve.
- It works very well on dry elbows. Scrub your elbows and apply Rosebud Salve on them. If you make this a routine you will have some pretty good harvest to reap.
- Use it underneath the foundation, after the primer, on areas where your skin tends to get very dry and where the foundation begins to separate. This has worked beautifully for me; I get a glowing, lit-from-within look once I have my foundation on. This product holds base makeup in place. I use it on my t-zone and around the mouth. It hasn’t broken me out, nor has it greased me up. Bear in mind I use matte foundations. Give this trick a try. If it doesn’t work, all you have to do is wash your face and get rid of the product. But if it does work, you’ll have a look that will keep others guessing!
- Apply the salve on your nails and cuticles to give them a soft, nourished look.
I highly, highly recommend this salve. Pick it up at duty-free or if you know someone who is visiting from abroad, ask them to pick up a few of these. You should have one of these lying everywhere. One in your handbag, one in your dressing table, and one in the locker for doomsday purposes! 😉
