It’s monsoon! A season many love but I only wish I could. This is the worst time for my skin AND hair. And also my moods.
Speaking of hair, mine goes all frizzy in this weather. Even straightening doesn’t hold my hair in place. For the longest time my hair would be dry and full of frizz in this weather. But I have over the past few years found a few products that genuinely have made a difference to the quality of my hair. It’s more soft and almost silky (when freshly washed and styled). It’s certainly not frizzy anymore, and not at all dry.
The hair typically goes frizzy because it is dehydrated. It’s humid all around you and yet your hair is starved of hydration. Water water everywhere, not a drop to drink? Quite so!
Monsoon haircare, therefore, needs to focus on giving your tresses extra doses of hydration. In simple terms, deep conditioning and nourishment.
How to do it?
Wash your hair at least twice a week, keep the dandruff at bay
A lot depends on how dirty your scalp gets. A clean scalp is always preferable to a grimy one, especially if you have dandruff. You can forget about great hair with a dirty scalp. So keep wash it regularly; whatever ‘regular’ means to you is your sweet spot.
Use a strong hair smoothing mask
I don’t recommend oiling the hair in this season. It will only contribute to the grime, and might even cause pimples/prickly heat. Once you have thoroughly washed your hair the conditioning effect of the oil is gone anyway.
Instead, I recommend a hair mask. You can use homemade hair masks if that works for you. Choose deeply conditioning ingredients.
I personally love the Mamaearth Argan Hair Mask. It deeply conditions the hair and leaves it lustrous and smooth. The effect lasts for a few days (depending on external factors). What I particularly love about this mask is the ease of use. Unlike other masks which are required to be applied to wet hair in the shower, this one can be applied to dry hair as well. So put it on 20 to 25 minutes before shower time and then wash your hair with your trusted shampoo. That’s it, you’re done. No need for a conditioner or anything. This actually saves time and gives phenomenal results!
Add argan essential oil to your shampoo
This will further soften your hair. However, if you find your hair is soft enough with a mask alone, you may skip this step. Depends on how dry your hair is.
Use tea tree oil or peppermint oil to target dandruff
For a squeaky clean scalp, both tea tree oil and peppermint oil work by eliminating dandruff. Add a drop of either of these oils to your shampoo. At the moment I’m loving the Apple Cider Vinegar shampoo by Wow Skinscience. It’s mild enough for daily use and smells heavenly. It also leaves your hair clean and fresh.
Use a deep conditioner
If you don’t have the time for a mask, use a super rich conditioner, or another mask as a conditioner. I recommend Wella Elements Renewing Mask by Wella Professionals. Leave in the product longer than usual for long-lasting results.
Let the hair dry naturally
Blowdrying contributes to frizz by robbing the hair of its natural moisture. But if you must blow dry, do so with the nozzle facing downwards.
Use a heat protection serum
This will not only protect the hair against harmful effects of the heat emanating from styling tools, but also contribute a healthy shine to it.
Don’t brush the hair too much or roughly
Basically, be gentle with the hair, which is good advice any time of the year.
Apply a smoothing serum on top
This is optional. Depends on how much shine you want in your hair. Don’t overdo this or your hair will go limp.
Sleep on a silk pillowcase
I’ve spoken about this elsewhere, too. Sleeping on a silk pillowcase or a silk cloth spread on a pillowcase keeps the hair soft (and is helpful for the skin as well). Just make sure to use a fresh one regularly if not every single night.
