When I find a lipstick I love, I want to shout about it from the rooftops! And that’s how I’m currently feeling about Marrakesh by MAC. It calls to mind the old-world charm of Moroccan bazaars and the wanderlust of a younger me. This rustic red hue is warm and spicy, like a glass of mulled wine, or a cup of cinnamon latte. And with it being autumn here in Australia that’s hitting all the sweetest spots in me.
The shade
The colour is absolutely spot on for me (it’s a rusty brick red on my Indian skin tone), and I believe it would be flattering on most people – though this is a subjective matter, of course.
If you look this lipstick up online, everybody seems to describe the colour differently. Some have called it “orange brown” (and it did look like that on a Samsung phone), others have called it copper.
I think my iPhone has done a very good job with colour rendition. The photos here are all unedited and unfiltered, so the shade is actually how it looks on me in real life. Try it out in-store if the shade seems confusing online.
The formula
I almost hate to admit this, and I wish this weren’t the fact. This lipstick is so close to being my all-time favourite. But unfortunately, the formula could be better.
- It’s not transfer-proof.
- It doesn’t survive eating/drinking and fades unevenly, which is a bummer.
- It doesn’t leave behind a pretty stain, either – rather something that needs to be addressed right away. Either reapply the lipstick or take it off completely.
- Drying formula
However, if you know you’re not going to be eating, then this one stays on.
Verdict
On the basis of colour alone, this one is a winner for me. A must-try, in any case. Just make sure to moisturise your lips beforehand, because it’s a matte lipstick.
