As beautiful as eye makeup looks, removing it is a real pain. For one, you are supposed to be very gentle with the eye area in general. And for another, the formulas of mascaras and eyeliners have become so good, that they don’t break down easily. Which means it’s difficult to continue being gentle with the eye area when you’re trying to rid it of makeup.
Want a long-lasting smudge-proof winged liner? Well, even if you do pull it off magically well, when the night is over can you do an equally good job of making sure it’s gone? Like GONE for real?
Speaking of…
Hello, raccoon eyes
Practically all my life has been a struggle to first get eye makeup on (in the best possible way) and then to take it off (in the best possible way).
I’m almost proud of myself for not ever having gone to bed with makeup on, no matter how tired or drunk I may have been. (Except for a couple of occasions…)
But the morning afters weren’t a case of my skin thanking me; rather, me greeting myself with what can only and aptly be described as raccoons eyes. So obviously, I DIDN’T take all the makeup of the night previous.
So here’s what I do now, to give myself the best shot of waking up with a clean face.
Step 1. Break down heavy eye makeup with vaseline, coconut oil, or olive oil. Like go in with my fingers very gently in a back and forth motion to really break down the mascara and the eyeliner. Take your time here, it’s important to loosen up all the makeup. (It’s also important to not let coconut oil seep into the surrounding skin because it’s comedogenic.)
Step 2. With a clean wet cloth, gently wipe it all away. Take your time here as well.
Step 3. Wash my entire face with a cleanser. Then wipe the eye area with a tissue, which brings out more gunk from the eyes.
Step 4. A little bit of Neutrogena Oil Free Eye Makeup Remover or Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water on a cotton pad and in I go again. Very gently, tracing the lash lines and going around the rim of the eye.
Step 5. With a dry tissue I’ll pat the entire area dry, and also this picks up a little residue.
Finally we are done. This process takes around 15 minutes.
Despite this, I might still wake up the next day with what look like eyes very lightly rimmed in kohl. But this comes off easily with a damp tissue.
For light makeup or when I’m travelling, I use only the Neutrogena eye makeup remover or the micellar water.
What do you guys do to remove your eye makeup, and how well does that work?
